BBQ Lunch at Coit Road Farmers Market Funds Market Upgrades

Sat 6/21 @11AM-1PM

The Coit Road Farmers Market is one of those local treasures more people should discover.  It is Cleveland’s oldest farmers market, and the only one with its own dedicated building.

But at the time the farmers market movement was revving up in Cleveland a decade ago, it had fallen on some hard times, resembling a flea market or a yard sale more than a farmers market.

That’s changed. New vendors — farmers, bakers, and other purveyors of locally raised and produced food — have replaced the dealers of used cassettes. Market manager Kevin Scheuring is also Spicehound, selling his $1 packets of herbs and spices from around the world.

And this week, to raise a little scratch for some improvements to the nonprofit market, he’ll be hosting a barbecue lunch from 11am-1 pm. He’s promising long-smoked pulled pork, chicken, smoked catfish, and possibly some other stuff too. Main course, sides and a drink are $6 — and there will be vegan/vegetarian options too.

Before lunch, you’ll want to fill your shopping bag with the seasonal produce coming in, including scapes, strawberries, green garlic, fresh herbs, swiss chard, lettuce, radishes, kohlrabi, bok choy, onions, and turnip greens. Afterward take some time to explore the market’s native plant garden nearby where volunteers have been planting blueberry, raspberry and hazelnut bushes.

Market hours are 8am-1pm Saturdays and 10am-1pmWednesdays April through November.
