Now that all that patriotic stuff is out of the way, the stage at Blossom Music Center is cleared for the Cleveland Orchestra to makes its first appearance at its summer home.
Austrian conductor Hans Graf, recently retired as music director of the Houston Symphony, will lead the orchestra, replacing originally scheduled conductor Jaap van Zweden, who has an injured shoulder. The program includes Capriccio Italien by Tchaikovsky, who apparently didn’t get enough exposure with the repeated airings of the 1812 Overture over the last several days, Sibelius’ Violin Concerto, and Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9, From the New World, popularly known as the New World Symphony, written in 1893 when the Czech composer was living in New York. Its name refers to its American folk music influences, including Negro spirituals.
French violinist Renaud Capuçon ([pictured) makes his Cleveland Orchestra debut as the soloist in the concerto.
