Cabinet, Driftwood play Kent Folk Fest New Music Monday @KentStage

Mon 6/9 @ 8PM

In the midst of the Kent Folk Fest at the Kent Stage comes “New Music Monday,” featuring two younger bands whose rootsy music is finding heavy favor in the jam-band scene.

Pennsylvania’s Cabinet (pictured) has already built itself a loyal following in its appearances at the Beachland Ballroom. (Bassist Pappy Biondo’s family lives in the North Collinwood neighborhood).

The sextet uses instruments like banjo, mandolin, and fiddle to create a sound that takes off from bluegrass and soars off in various directions, while maintaining a rural, rootsy sound that gives off a communal vibe.

Binghamton, New York’s Driftwood also imbues their music with American roots sounds, including bluegrass, country, and traditional folk, driving them with the throb of rock and roll. The quartet places a heavy focus on their diverse and sophisticated songwriting, which draws from a wide pool of musical influences, as well as the male/female lead and harmony vocals of guitarist Dan Forsyth, banjo player Joe Kollar, and violinist Claire Byrne.

Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door. At that price, anyone hungry to discover great young bands can’t afford not to go.
