There’s a whole new vibe to the Tri-C Jazz Fest this year, as the event celebrates its 35th birthday. It’s become a real festival, with everything happening over one weekend and in one location — the theaters at Playhouse Square.
It kicks off tonight at the Ohio Theatre, showcasing a local jazz treasure you can hear year-round: the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra. CJO will be joined by the Sean Jones Quartet, led by rising young trumpet star Sean Jones, who also happens to be CJO’s artistic director.
Together, they will pay tribute to the music of composer/educator/bassist Christian McBride who will join the group on bass. (McBride’s own band plays at the Ohio Theatre Saturday.)
Tickets are $22.50-$45. Except for Friday night’s concert with Gregory Porter, for which all the tickets were purchased by the Cleveland Foundation and given away free, tickets are still available for all concerts. Go here to buy them.
