Yes, there’s still opera in Cleveland, even though the city lacks a high-profile company anymore.
The small but dedicated Opera Circle concludes its 18th season with a production of an opera you most likely haven’t seen: Die tote Stadt (The Dead City), composed by the German Erich Korngold in 1920 when he was only 23 years old.
Set in Bruges, Belgium, which had been a medieval urban hub but was just coming out of a long decline when Korngold wrote his opera, the piece deals with a man mourning the death of his beloved wife who suffers visions and hallucinations after encountering a dancer who resembles his late wife.
The fully staged production with orchestra, chorus, sets, costumes, and supertitles will be performed at PlayhouseSquare’s Ohio Theatre.
Tickets are $20-$85.
