Lock 3 Live’s summer-long schedule of tribute bands is broken up here and there with something more interesting, including touring acts (the Indigo Girls are coming up in August) and festivals.
This week it’s one of the latter: the 34th annual African-American Festival, a family-friendly event, which will feature music all day on the big stage starting at noon. It culminates with Cleveland’s funky Dazz Band, who had a string of R&B hits in the early-mid ’80s and one big crossover charter: “Let It Whip” in 1982.
Other acts playing include contemporary gospel group Half Way Home, world music ensemble Heartbeat Afrika, and performance poet/spoken word artist Mwatabu Okantah & the MKE Project.
Gates open at 11am, and the festival is free until 5pm. It’s $7 after that. So come down and spend the day.
