No one in northeast Ohio works harder to try to revive swing dancing in the area than Valerie Salstrom.
Her business, Get Hep Swing, sponsors dances at the Slovenian Workman’s Home on Waterloo on the last Saturday of every month and at Lakewood’s Masonic Temple on the second Friday. There beginners can learn the ropes of this ’20s/’50s-era style of dance that includes the Balboa the Lindy and the jitterbug, and old pros can polish their presentation to the sound of live swing bands.
For the next three months, she’s added another, higher profile venue: the Cleveland Museum of Art soaring new central atrium. On the second Sunday of July, August and September, she and her instructors will provide a lesson before opening the floor to dancers of all skill levels. If you don’t have a partner, never mind — there’ll be plenty of dancers there to pair up with.
Like admission to the museum, it’s free.
