PlayhouseSquare launches yet ANOTHER free music series, the Midsummer Night Salsa series, with the first of three free concerts at the U.S. Bank Plaza at East 14th and Euclid.
The music will be provided by DJ Efrain “Frankie” Flores, a native Clevelander who cut his teeth playing house music for underground parties in Cleveland in the early ’90s. Despite his Mexican/Peruvian background, he didn’t discover salsa until he spent some time in New York — and only after he’d been DJing for over a decade. But he’s a cheerleader and super salesman for the genre now, working to keep alive the genre’s whole historical storyline — and to fill dance floors.
His partner in that enterprise at PlayhouseSquare will be Latin dancer/instructor Rebecca Sweet, who will be giving free salsa lessons at each session from 5-6pm before turning the dancers loose on the floor to dance to Flores’ vinyl records this week; DJ Nacho Wed 8/13; and Sammy de Leon y su Orquestra with DJ Nacho spinning between sets on Wed 8/20.
