Soul Rebels Bring New Orleans To @Mahalls20Lanes

Thu 7/17 @ 9PM

New Orleans’ eight-piece Soul Rebels come out of their native town’s rich jazz/brass band tradition. Like many younger players who delved into genres that were once in danger of dying out, they added contemporary influences like R&B, rock, and especially hip hop.

Since they were founded in 1991 and released their debut album in 1995, they are no longer young guns. But they’ve kept that youthful ear and enthusiasm for fresh approaches. Their latest release, Power = Power, which came out in December, borrows a popular rap approach to putting out material. It’s a free mixtape download packed with live tracks, remixes, new original material and covers of artists like Bruno Mars, Jay-Z, Drake, and Nicki Minaj.

They’ve also really begun to come into their own as far as gathering acclaim in the last several years. After six independent release, they put out their national debut on respected folk/roots label Rounder in 2012.

They’re back at Mahall’s in the Lakewood for another Cleveland-area party.

Tickets are $15 in advance, $18 at the door.
