This is a good week to check out the Akron Art Museum’s free summer concert series Downtown @ Dusk. It features another rising local original group: Akron/Kent folk rockers the Speedbumps.
The band has been kicking around the scene for a while, but their nuanced, vaguely jam band-ish music has really just started to get attention following the release of last year’s polished yet heartfelt The Harbors We Seek. They played at Austin’s South by Southwest Music Conference and Canadian Music Week in Toronto this year, and they’ve been doing a lot of road dates. And the band’s lead singer, guitarist and songwriter Eric Urycki just won an American Songwriter Award in the adult alternative category for the song “Montreal” from The Harbors We Seek.
Urycki, cellist Sam Kristoff, bassist Kevin Martinez, and percussionist Pat Hawkins are often joined by other musicians for live performances so you never know who might show up for the Akron Art Museum show. Food and drink will be available, and it’s free Thursday so you can check out the galleries as well.
