Wade Oval Wednesdays at University Circle bring the season to a close with a good one: northeast Ohio Americana quartet Hey Mavis.
The band was formed six years ago by violinist Ed Caner who has played everything from classical music to noisy underground rock, and his wife, banjo player/vocalist/songwriter Laurie Michelle Caner, along with vocalist/guitarist Brent Kirby and upright bassist Bryan Thomas. They released their sophomore album Honey Man early last year, showing off their ability to saunter from mood to mood in songs that have some down-home flavoring added to smoky, complex musical stew. They demonstrate how appealing and fun original music can be — no tribute bands needed.
