Mavis Staples Headlines @MusicBoxCle

Thu 8/21 @ 8PM

Mavis Staples began singing with her family in churches around her native Chicago when she was just a little girl. With a solid base in gospel, they branches out into soul and pop, hitting the big time in the early ’70s as the Staples Singers with hits like “Respect Yourself” and “I’ll Take You There.”

Mavis, now 75, is the only member of that act, which included her father and three siblings, still performing  professionally. She’s had a busy solo career for more than four decades that’s included collaborations with Prince, Ry Cooder, and Jeff Tweedy of Wilco, among others, as well as acting gigs and civil rights activism.

She’ll perform at the Music Box Supper Club, with dynamic Cleveland blues/rock performer Kristine Jackson opening.

Tickets are $42 in advance, $45 at the door.
