Veteran Americana band the Blasters Come to @AkronMusica

Thu 9/4 @ 8PM

Southern California rockers the Blasters, formed in 1979, were one of the first prominent bands in the hybrid genre that’s come to be called “Americana.”

Formed by a pair of brothers, guitarist/vocalist Phil Alvin and guitarist Dave Alvin, along with bassist John Bass and drummer Bill Bateman, the band used blues, R&B, and rockabilly as a springboard but found themselves involved with L.A.’s punk scene which gave their music a bit of a jolt.

Dave Alvin went on to a productive solo career in 1986. Phil has continued to bring the Blasters out for occasional tours, when he’s got time off from his primary gig as a mathematics professor, although they haven’t released a studio album since the mid ’80s.

The Blasters will be playing their classic tunes from the ’80s at Musica in Akron.. You’ll want to catch the opening act as well, New York’s lively Gas House Gorillas, who call themselves “Punk Americana” and play an engaging mix of R&B, jump blues, swing, Cajun, and good ol’ rock ’n’ roll.

Tickets are $20.
