Connecting

In our fractured world, how do we connect with each other? At Cool Cleveland, we do it by providing you with links to the coolest stuff happening: via our weekly e-blast, on our site, posted to Facebook and Twitter, and now, on our free mobile app for iPhone and iPad. Here’s how we’re helping you connect this week: a feature on ARTSYISM, to cure autism; an exclusive interview with Hairspray playwright Mark O’Donnell who returns to Cle to speak to the new Connect to Beck group; an invite to Ingenuity’s Speakeasy 2.0; a scan of summer festivals this weekend. We hope you get out and make the connection. –Thomas Mulready

AUDIO: Mark O’Donnell Will Connect To Beck
Listen to the Exclusive Interview

Cleveland native Mark O’Donnell, Tony award winner for writing the Broadway play Hairspray, returns to his roots (he once acted in Our Town at Lakewood Little Theatre, before their name change) to kick off the inaugural event for the Beck Center’s new group, Connect to Beck, (C2B) helping to introduce people in their 20’s, 30’s and 40’s to Beck Center through social, cultural and insider events. O’Donnell will speak at 6PM on Sat 7/16, and C2B members will meet-and-greet, have drinks and apps, and then attend the 8PM presentation of Hairspray on the Mackey Main Stage at the Beck Center.

Listen to this exclusive interview with Mark O’Donnell about growing up on the West Side of Cleveland with 10 brothers and sisters, then graduating to Harvard University, the Harvard Lampoon, National Lampoon, and Saturday Night Live, which led to his work with John Waters on the Broadway adaptations of his films Hairspray and Cry-Baby, making him one of the pioneers of a fresh comedic style still popular today. He also talks about his work as a writer, with 5 books, 2 humor collections, and his poetry, cartoons and humor being published by the likes of The New Yorker, The Atlantic, and McSweeney’s. In photo at left, Mark O’Donnell is surrounded by Hairspray producer Margo Lion and Bruce Vilanch as Edna Turnblad. Listen to the interview and learn more.

Speakeasy 2.0 mixes old entertainment w/ new technology

Technological innovation may be the driving force behind IngenuityFest, but some unique ideas turn out to be just, well, bad ideas.

For example, the notion of Prohibition, which seems as surreal today as it was putting a man on the moon back in the 1920s, proved to be a failure. Still, IngenuityFest celebrates the era with Speakeasy 2.0 on Fri 7/15Read more from John Benson here

Movin’ & groovin’ to Chrissie Hynde
GroundWorks rocks out w/ Hindsight

It was like the setup for a joke. Two choreographers walked into a vegan restaurant and the one, a local guy, said, “You gotta try this great restaurant; it belongs to Chrissie Hynde,” and the other choreographer, from New York, said, “Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders? Why does she own a restaurant in Akron?”

And he explained that Hynde is from Akron so the choreographer from NYC says, “You should do a piece to Hynde’s music…” Read more from Elsa Johnson & Victor Lucas here
