Engage

It was about this time nine years ago that we bumped into a few Cirque du Soleil artists in town for a month-long series of performances in a tent in the Flats. When the young, international artists expressed indifference (and ignorance) about Cleveland’s cultural treasures, I sent what was the first Cool Cleveland email to them, highlighting a few cool events they might be interested in. Since then, Cool Cleveland’s gone viral and tens of thousands pay attention each week on our site, blog, social media feeds and our new mobile app for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. As we enter our tenth year, I’ve tried to keep it simple, offering a personally curated selection of cool things to do, cool people and news you should be aware of, and cool places to visit. –Thomas Mulready

VIDEO: Transformer Station
Exclusive Interview with Fred & Laura Bidwell

A truly transformative project is about to take place on West 29th Street, just South of Detroit Avenue, when the Cleveland Museum of Art, with a gift from the Fred & Laura Ruth Bidwell Foundation, opens The Transformer Station, a one-time substation for the Cleveland Railway Company. An addition will bring the facility to 8000 square feet, which will be curated six months of the year by the CMA and the other six months by the Bidwells, avid photography collectors and supporters of local artists.

Listen to this exclusive interview with the Bidwells as they talk about their passion for contemporary art and photography, and how they hope The Transformer Station will become a laboratory and think tank, and help break the artificial boundaries between the East and West sides of Cleveland, and between Cleveland and their home, and the home of their business, JWT Action, in Akron.

I don’t know about today, but back in the “Roaring ’80s” academia was obsessed with putting students into “groups” to work on in-class assignments in an effort to better develop our collaboration skills (and therefore better prepare us to defeat the Soviets).

Instead, the smart and nerdy kids (who had usually helped the teacher set up the experiments in the first place) would beg, cajole, and ultimately receive the correct answers from the instructor, and these eggheads would then be strategically ambushed by an intellectually inferior group to copy their answers, and they would in turn have their answers copied by the next group, until finally everyone had copied the answers from somebody else, just in time to turn in the assignment before the bell rang.

What I find interesting is that this phenomenon is not limited to a couple of mullet-wearing, Styx-loving, Trans Am driving groupies during the Reagan Administration, but rather this practice is alive and well 25 years later, and is in fact RAMPANT within social media today… Read Soundbite Laureate by Douglas O’Bryon here.

The troubling case of Edward Henderson, the 40-year-old Cleveland Heights man with a history of mental illness whose encounter with four Cleveland police officers on New Year’s Day 2011 left him with a broken nose, a shattered eye socket, and a detached retina, inched forward in a Cuyahoga County courtroom last week…

Beating up on drunks & Politricks I’d already read Lofgrens piece. I hope everyone does and I hope they start paying attention. This country is doomed if they don’t wake up and start taking part in the political system…

HB 194 brings uniformity to the voting process in our state, and makes sure there is equal opportunity for every Ohio voter to cast a ballot in elections. And part of the deal includes mailing vote-by-mail ballots to every registered voter for the 2012 elections. So what you want is the opportunity to vote down (from the comfort of your own home) a bill that mails ballots to every Ohio voter and gives everyone equal access to the voting process? Really???…
