Fusing

04.13-04.20.11
Fusing

Fusing our assets and our ambition, Cool Cleveland strives to strip away the myth and expose the real Cleveland region, melding the disparate and the diverse. This fusion can be witnessed in this week’s issue: Vegan Iron Chef, FusionFest at CPH, food trucks, Tri-C’s upcoming JazzFest, a nature festival for kids, visiting playwright George Seremba, Nihonshu Night at CMA (fusion food!), Erin Kapferer’s debut CD, and Bach’s Art of the Fugue, merged with a choir, at CSU. Sounds like fusion’s been with us a long time. –Thomas Mulready

The fight for food trucks Currently, food trucks aren’t allowed to park downtown. Legislation has been underway to change this ordinance, but the process has been a slow-go. Too slow for the chefs at Dim and Den Sum [pictured], who’re getting impatient. But City Council says not to worry…

About three or four summers ago, on a Fourth of July weekend, a good friend and neighbor of mine called to — hesitantly — ask me if everything was OK at my house. He could hear the puzzled sound to my voice when I responded “yes, everything’s fine.”

“The only reason I asked is because you have four police cars in your driveway,” he explained…

VIDEO: The Art of Fugue
Hear Bach’s Final Masterpiece as Never Before

Corey Rubin had a deep appreciation and love of Bach, but he found it disappointing that, as a vocalist, he hadn’t had the opportunity to perform Bach’s The Art of Fugue. The Art of Fugue, BWV 1080 was Bach’s final masterpiece, and is performed today by many different types of instruments and ensembles, but rarely by choirs. The piece is a study of the many ways a single musical subject, or theme, can be presented. You can hear it @ CSU’s Drinko Hall on Sun 4/17.

Inspired by his desire to sing this great work, and by the open scoring of the piece, which allows it to be easily arranged for different ensembles, Rubin decided to stage a concert featuring all 14 of the fugues performed by 14 different ensembles… Watch the Cool Cleveland video interview with Corey Rubin here.

A few reasons Cleveland is cooler than Chicago Six months ago I relocated to Chicago. And while Chicago provides myriad options beyond the northeast reaches and beaches of Lake Erie, Cleveland certainly offers up some important pluses that should be imparted compared with the metropolis west of south Lake Michigan…

MANSFIELD: Silos of Self-Interest Again, to those that are personally offended, lets hear what part of the mascot offends you. I have heard everything from the mischievous smile to a drunken indian. I do not see either when I look at the mascot. Does that make me wrong…?

At this point, this is all about the macho swagger of the owners. Teams change logos ALL the time in order to sell a whole new set of merchandise. The Indians could have done this decades ago…

I associated mindless racism with entertainment, with trips to Jacobs Field with my father. It may seem like this issue only hurts Native Americans, but it also hurts the cultural mindset of Northeast Ohio. We must demand sports teams stop brainwashing children to associate discrimination (even if on a subconcious level) with family and tradition…
