Survival

This time of year, we think hard about our survival, even though we know Spring is right around the corner. For inspiration, we turn to the four co-creators of Survival Kit Gallery and tour the bowels of CPH, on the verge of their move; we acknowledge how CSU has transformed the urban core; we talk with the Mighty Max Weinberg and review Sexy Robot; we discuss County ethics and Mansfield offers a key to success in the inner city. It’s nice that Travel+Leisure calls us visionary… but that’s just the way we survive. –Thomas Mulready

Survival Kit Gallery
A new home for alternative art

Survival Kit, a gallery that opened in the 78th Street Building, has a history that forms the perfect narrative to represent Cleveland as a city that can re-define itself as a vibrant and creative center. Four young artists, each with unique talents and backgrounds, had traveled and explored scenes all over the world and came to the conclusion that they could best realize their vision in Cleveland.

Artist Suzanne Cofer summed it up by saying, “This doesn’t happen in other cities.” For one thing, larger cities with bigger markets for art allow for complacency; you can blend into a scene. In a city like Cleveland, you create it… Read more from Emmie Hutchison here

The transformation of CSU

While most of the publicity surrounding the new development projects underway in downtown Cleveland has focused on big-ticket items like the proposed casino, convention center and medical mart, Cleveland State University has slowly but surely been undergoing a dramatic expansion that is turning its once-staid environs into a traditional, urban-style campus with a lively, neighborhood feel.

When I first read about Demrick McCloud, the young man a jury recently acquitted of kidnapping and assault charges, I immediately wondered if there was relationship between him and Brandon McCloud, the 15-year-old that was killed by Cleveland police officers in his own bedroom back in 2005.

Turns out they were brothers…

COMMENT: Do Not Be Angry With Governor Kasich; It’s Not His Fault, It’s Ours. If we are a city moving forward, it is imperative that we build upon the best practices and not what has held us down for decades. This is not about the black caucus or Rep. Stokes, this is now, and this is relevant. I would like to know where you stand on the actions of your new governor; not play political fault volleyball…

MANSFIELD: Toms and Pimps. I won’t bear on the writings of Morris, like others; but, I’ve always had issue with one point. I’ve always heard of “separate but equal” not being possible. I believe this is true; it’s not possible. What I wonder is how people expect equality to be reached if people always talk about the race of a person…
