Cleveland Public Theatre Presents Premiere of Pro-Choice Play

Thu 4/25-Sat 5/11

Power-hungry rightwing anti-abortion forces miscalculated the impact of the overturning of Roe v. Wade nearly two years ago. The media helped them out by suggesting that women would quickly forget they had been stripped of bodily autonomy and control of their own lives by forces clearly less concerned with “unborn babies” than with making women second-class citizens.

But that blowback isn’t going away and could have a major impact on the November elections. Rachel Bublitz’s play Funny, Like an Abortion, which opens at Cleveland Public Theatre this week, addresses the rage a majority of women and their allies have felt about this massive government overreach into our private lives. It projects a future America where even saying the word “abortion” is a crime, a future that right now doesn’t seem all that far-fetched, as some states are fighting to imprison women within their borders, trying to make it illegal to leave the state to get reproductive care. Salt Lake City-based Bublitz is a much-performed playwright who work mainly focused on topics relating to women.

The production is part of the National New Play Network Rolling World Premiere, where a group of CPT-sized theaters offers a premiere production of a play within a twelve-month period with the playwright actively involved with each.

Funny, Like an Abortion runs Thursday-Saturday and Mondays @ 7pm and Sundays April 28 and May 5 @ 3pm, A;; tickets are “pay what you choose.” Friday April 26 features a post-show talk with Bublitz; Saturday April 27 includes a post-show part with cast members. On Friday May 3 the Preterm nonprofit abortion clinic will host a post-show discussion. And on Market Monday May 6, there’s a pre-show pop-up market one hour before curtain with local vendors and artists.
