Glam

It’s an audacious thesis. Glam didn’t begin and end in the early 1970’s: it stretches back to the turn of the last century and continues to today. Come to our Glam Brunch this Sun 6/5 at noon at the BOP STOP and argue with me if you want. We’ve dug up a trove of rare video, choice needle drops, familiar sing-alongs, a trivia contest and a giveaway or two. Enjoy brunch and take a walk on the wild side.

Stroll one of our finest neighborhoods when Little Italy hosts their Summer Art Walk all weekend long. Ingenuity’s benefit Bal Ingenieux is always one of the city’s most glamorous and fun parties. The brand new Playwright Local 4181 is mounting their first full production at Dobama. This is the week to represent Cleveland in style, and our fashion maven Dru Thompson points the way.

Summer farmers markets are opening, and we’ve got the links. The upcoming Agumboot Music Festival is hosting a backer party & you’re invited. Uno Lady hosts songwriters on Luxe’s patio. Or climb up to the Music Box’s rooftop for a wine party. And if none of that fits your style, there’s Taste of Lakewood, Race for the Place, W.A.G.S. 4 Kids, Kudos at Brick Gallery, Power of the Tower at Tower Press, or ColossalCon in Sandusky. Now glam it up. –Thomas Mulready

Glam’s golden yearswith David Bowie, T.Rex and Queen in the mid-1970’s were but the revealing midriff: drag, burlesque and Little Richard came before; and the Glam firmament blazes a glittering trail through punk, disco, techno and pop, all the way to Prince, Madonna, Sia, Lorde and Lady Gaga.

This is your invitation to join our Glam Brunch on Sun 6/5 at noon at the BOP STOP. Our Brunch With Bowie sold out 3 times, so secure the edge of your seat now.

Anthemic songwriting. Transgressive politics. Androgynous decadence. Join CoolCleveland’s Thomas Mulready and DJ JD for a walk on the wild side that includes needle drops, rare video, trivia contests, giveaways and sing-alongs, plus a live music showcase by Vanity Crash. Tickets are on sale now. Feel free to dress the part. [Photo: Freddie Mercury of Queen by Anastasia Pantsios]

Little Italy was Cleveland’s original art neighborhood, with galleries packing its storefronts and its former elementary school, mingling with the Italian restaurants and bakeries. And its art walks were Cleveland’s first.

Since then, it’s been challenged by other neighborhoods and fallen off the radar a bit. But the art walks – art weekends actually – are still going on, lately fueled by an influx of new artists, businesses and restaurants. John Benson takes us on a tour of the upcoming summer art walk. Fri 6/3-Sun 6/5.

Just in time for Safe Boating Week, the Cleveland Metroparks conducted a “waterbreaking” ceremony and launched their new Water Taxi service, allowing visitors to cross between the East and West Banks of the Cuyahoga River for $2 a day, with unlimited trips. CoolCleveland spoke with Captain Michael Bobincheck as he prepared to shove off on his inaugural voyage across the River.

Dogs and bikes are welcome, and the Water Taxi is conveniently located near the Music Box Supper Club on the West Bank, and next to Coastal Taco by the RTA stop on the East Bank, and both are connected to the Towpath Trail.

Each of the area’s small theater groups has its own mission. The brand new Playwrights Local 4181 has taken on the important mission of staging new scripts as well as helping to develop writers through workshops and classes.

CoolCleveland theater critic Roy Berko checks out the production and tells us more about the company’s goals. Through Sun 6/12.

Emily Applebaum, program director for Ingenuity gives us the inside scoop on Bal Ingenieux, fashioned after the historic Kokoon Arts Club, taking place June 4 to raise money for Ingeniuty’s annual programs, and for the region’s premier celebration of the creative class.

Check out their cool new venue at the Tenk Building on the West Bank of the Flats where Bal Ingenieux explodes with dancing, costumes, the Sokol Ariel Circus, the Lost State of Franklin, DJ P Stoops, the Ernie Krivda Quartet, and a special award to CWRU’s Think[box] for making entrepreneurship accessible.

Let’s not jinx anything by saying that Cleveland could be headed for its first championship in more than a half century. But you can sense the excitement in the number of Cavs jerseys and tees you’re seeing around.

For those of you sports fans who love the team but hate the clunky look of many of those T-shirts, our fashion maven Dru Thompson has some pointers on how to look chic and trendy while still flying your team colors.
