Cleveland International Piano Competition Kicks Off

Tue 7/30 @ 6:30PM

The opening ceremony of the biennial Cleveland International Piano Competition at the Cleveland Museum of Art kicks off nearly two weeks of concerts and other events by the time the awards ceremony and medalist recital at Severance Hall rolls around on August 11.

The days between will be filled with music conversations, a roundtable discussion with the jury, a film, a young artists recital, a gala benefit, a couple of master classes, and of course the first, second, and semi-final, and final round concerts. Most of the events will be at the Cleveland Museum of Art; the finalists will perform at Severance Hall with the Cleveland Orchestra before the winner is chosen.

And it’s a big deal to be the winner. He or she gets $50,000, two years of professional career management and more than performance dates around the U.S.

“After having spent years in training at conservatories around the world, a CIPC winner has won more than first prize – he has won a career,” promises the CIPC website.

The opening event will feature 2011 first-prize winner Alexander Schimpf playing Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 13 in C Major, K. 415 with CityMusic Cleveland and Cleveland Institute of Music president Joel Smirnoff conducting.

Then guests will be introduced to this year’s 28 young contestants, ages 18-30, who come from Russia, Poland, China, Taiwan, Belarus, Latvia, Germany, Switzerland, South Korea, France, Ukraine, Georgia, Vietnam, South Africa, and the U.S., with a reception following.

Tickets to the opening event are $50.
