Columbus’ Shrub Bring New CD to @BeachlandBallroom

Fri 1/10 @ 9PM

You can tell why a band like Shrub would come out of Columbus, Ohio. Their music combines all the things college kids like: the looseness of jam rock, the sunny dreaminess of reggae, the catchy beats of hip hop. It’s the soundtrack to a friendly, inclusive party that’s not mean or wild.

They’ve had themselves a busy year that included a raft of festivals, among them several at hippie heaven Nelson Ledges Quarry Park, and multiple showcases at Austin music conference SXSW. They’re also a frequent opening act for Sublime tribute band Badfish, which isn’t surprising: if Sublime frontman Brad Nowell hadn’t died of a drug overdose in 1996, they’d be the kings of this type of music.

Shrub just released their first album, Highceratops. When they celebrate their CD release at the Beachland Ballroom, they’ll be giving attendees a free copy with each $8 paid admission.

Three area bands — seven-piece funk-reggae/hip-hop band Wanyama, eclectic jam quartet Vibe & Direct, and Riptide — open.
