Trinidad-Born Jazz Trumpeter Etienne Charles @ClevelandArt MIX

Fri 5/2 @ 5-9PM

Young  jazz trumpet player Etienne Charles has been around, having lived in Florida, New York (where he attended Juilliard School of Music) and now Michigan, where he teaches at Michigan State University.

But his musical roots are in his native Trinidad. So he infuses his well-schooled jazz chops with influences from all over the culturally diverse Caribbean region. His four albums, including last year’s Creole Soul, draw on music from Haiti, Jamaica, and Venezuela, as well as his native island, fed by African, native, Spanish and French influences.

He throws American R&B and Motown influences in the pot, stirs and shakes well for some really spicy music that’s definitely in the spirit of the Cleveland Museum of Art’s monthly MIX events, where he’ll be playing. His appearance, dubbed Mix: Jazz, is co-sponsored by Tri-C JazzFest.

The event also features food, drink, and mingling.

Tickets are $8 in advance, $10 day of show; CMA members are free.
