Fairytales reveal the basic fears, desires and thoughts that people have had forever. One of those is the story of looking beyond appearances, and one of the best known of these is Beauty and the Beast. Originally written by a French (woman!) novelists in 1740, her lengthy, convoluted story was rewritten and simplified a few years later by another woman writer, who created the story that fueled countless other versions including the 1991 Disney film and the 1994 stage musical based on it.

Now the Summit County-based Ballet Theatre of Ohio presents the company premiere of Beauty and the Beast as its latest full-length story ballet, with full sets and costumes, for three performances at the Akron Civic Theatre. Given its story of a beautiful young woman who finds the enchanted prince behind the Beast, it’s a story right in keeping with classical story ballets.
