Akron Symphony Closes Regular Season with a Big Blast of Mozart

Sat 5/11 @ 7:30PM

The Akron Symphony concludes its regular season at E.J. Thomas Hall with fanfare and a tidal wave of sound as it performs Mozart’s “Great” Mass in C minor which debuted in 1783, inspired by the choral works of J.S. Bach and Frederic Handel. It draws on the combined forces of the orchestra, the Akron Symphony Chorus, and four soloists: sopranos Sonya Headlam and Amanda Powell, tenor Tim Culver and baritone Brian Keith Johnson.

The orchestra will also play Maurice Ravel’s Le Tombeau de Couperin in which the late 19th-early 20th-century French composer Ravel drew on the baroque dances of 17th/18th-century French composer François Couperin. And they’ll open with “D’un Matin de Printemps (On a Spring Morning),” penned by still another French composer Lili Boulanger, written shortly before she died in 1918 at the age of 24 — largely unknown because her short life limited her output. And yes, she was the younger sister of Nadia Boulanger, whose 92 years gave her the opportunity for wider renown than her unfortunate, sickly sister.

Chris Albanese conducts the program. Get tickets here.
