Ride of Silence Honors Cyclists & Pedestrians Hurt or Killed in Traffic

Wed 5/15 @ 6:30PM

For nearly 15 years, safe streets nonprofit Bike Cleveland has been advocating for transportation infrastructure that is built for cyclists and pedestrians as well as for cars. So of course the organization takes part in the international Ride of Silence held in hundreds of cities and towns around the world for the past two decades to raise awareness of the dangers traffic poses to non-drivers.

Two groups will depart at 6:30pm from two different locations — the Free Stamp in Willard Park downtown from where they’ll be escorted by the Cleveland Police Bicycle Division and the parking lot next to John Carroll University’s Dolan Science Center led by the Heights Bicycle Coalition. They’ll ride slowly —12 mph — and in silence, and meet up at University Hospitals where there’ll be a short presentation in honor of those who’ve been injured or killed while using public streets. After that riders can return to their point of original and groups tend to form for the return rides.

“Our recent Crash Report shows that in 2023, 550 people biking and walking were hit by motor vehicles in Cleveland,” says Bike Cleveland, so there’ll be a lot of honoring to do, sadly. Anyone who wants to talk about how they’ve been impacted by traffic violence is welcome to dpo so.
