Open Sesame, Film About Seeds, Screens Outdoors at Gordon Square

Wed 8/15 @ 7:45PM

The 2013 documentary Open Sesame: The Story of Seeds, addresses the issue of the “ownership” of seeds, as big corporate entities have “patented” seeds, putting them out of affordable reach of growers and forcing dependence on those corporations. It explores how seeds impact food accessibility and affordability and what happens when they become private property.

Last May, the Cleveland Seed Bank, which promotes seed saving and the free distribution of seeds, brought the film to Gordon Square’s Capitol Theatre for a single screening.

Now they’re bringing it back, this time for an outdoor screening at St. Helena’s Church. It’ll take place at dusk following the Gordon Square Farmers Market, which runs every Wednesday from 4-7pm. In between you can stop by the bookstore Guide to Kulchur on W. 65th across from the church and check out its gardening and seed-saving ’zines; it’s offering 50% off to moviegoers.

They’ll provide some chairs or you can bring a blanket.

It’s free.
